Four fairytale days from the Green Oliver Alternative Tourism Office for Christmas Holidays! We bid farewell to 2019 with a festive trip to magical parts of southern Greece, on the Moria Peninsula, the Peloponnese! A Christmas excursion with our destination in Nafplio, which combines Christmas customs and culture with adventure tourism, action and hiking in nature!
Departure at 07.00 from the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki on Manolis Andronikos (extension of Basil Olga and Basil Georgiou to the center, shortly after the Town Hall). The stop will take place at 07.10 and at the traffic light at the height of One Salonica (diagonally across from Media Markt).
Our first destination is the decorated Ioannina, where we will stop for coffee and snacks by the lake Pamvotida, enjoying the festive atmosphere of the city!
Then, after boarding the bus, we will continue our journey to the beautiful Lake Ziros, which is opposite the community of Pantanassa Arta. Geologists even believe that the lake was a lake cave, but the roof collapsed 10,000 years ago!
There we will take a gentle walk around the lake, enjoying magical images in its crystal clear waters!
• Total route length: 5 mm
• Total hiking time: 1.5 hours
• Grade difficulty level: 1 (scale 1 - 5, basic fitness)
And then we will continue our journey to the fairytale Nafplio, one of the most beautiful and sweet cities in Greece!
There, after settling into our hotel, we will have free time to eat enjoying the Christmas atmosphere of the city!
After having our breakfast, we will depart for the most lively and tourist-developed capital of Mainalo, the charming Vitina! It is one of the most famous traditional villages of mountainous Arcadia at an altitude of 1033 meters at the foot of Mainalo!
There, we will hike part of the famous Mainalo Trail (which is 75 km long!), Certified by the European Ramblers Association (ERA) for its quality and safety and characterized as one of the most interesting mountains. for adventure!
After we first reach the Old Vitina, we will follow the path that will take us to Black Stones. It is a compact volume of limestone, torn by the flow of the Mylona River, forming a short but impressive canyon!
We will then descend on the stone-built bridge of Jawaraina, before our path begins to rise again in slabs dressed in tall bushes, to reach 880 meters and to move horizontally to the small but lively settlement of Nymfasia!
After touring the mountain village, we will follow a different path to return back to Vitina.
The route we take as a whole is relatively walkable and is aimed at most, with the necessity of using the hiking equipment described below.
• Total route length: 9 mm
• Total hiking time: 3 - 3.5 hours
• Degree of route difficulty: 2 (scale 1 - 5, moderate fitness)
Did you fall in love? We will walk to the famous "Road of Love", where the "bridal market" of Vitina was made with young people exchanging looks and messages of love! It is a small and easy, yet extremely romantic journey under plane trees and maples, captivating with their beauty and traveling the human mind in sweet thoughts!
Afterwards we will have free time both for coffee and snacks in the picturesque Kefalohori village, as well as to tour the village and visit the Greek school and Church of St. Tryphon which dominates the main square.
Afterwards, both groups will meet up to take the coach back to the beloved Nafplio, where after a short rest, we will be waiting for traditional food and evening walks in its adorned narrow streets and picturesque squares!
We get up early and leave at 09.00 for another day of action and touring! Our destination is Diakopto, which is a seaside town in the Prefecture of Achaia built on the shores of the Corinthian Gulf. There is a thrilling experience waiting for us all, riding the Toothless Railway under the shadow of Helmos!
More than 120 years ago, the Diakopto-Kalavryta Tooth Railway started from the seaside town of Diakopto, continued by the river, built bridges, pierced tunnels, threw "teeth" and managed to climb to Kalavrita! Since then and to this day, the Vauricus River and the Dentist have been going together!
After about 30 - 40 minutes on the Odontotos and after we have been captivated by the breathtaking images of unparalleled nature, it's time to explore it!
We will disembark at Mega Cave Station in Zachlorou village and from there we will start our journey back to Diakopto! A beautiful gravel path and next to the dentist's rails that impress every adventurous traveler - hiker!
The route we take is downhill, and the use of hiking equipment, as described below, is mandatory.
• Total route length: 14 mm
• Total hiking time: 4 - 4.5 hours
• Degree of difficulty of walking: 2 (scale 1 - 5, moderate fitness)
We will have the opportunity to enjoy the entire journey of the Dentist, from Diakopto to the magnificent Kalavryta!
A shocking journey of about 1 hour and 15 minutes, revealing in the eyes of the travelers the most hidden beauties of the Vouraikos Gorge!
And of course the sequel will find us in the idyllic winter resort of Kalavryta! The gorgeous square of Freedom - or Helmou -, the central cobblestone walkway, rustic cafes and restaurants are there for you to discover on Christmas Day!
In Kalavryta we will have about 2.30 - 3 hours of free time until we board the bus for our return to Diakopto.
There, we will meet both groups to board the bus back to Nafplio, where after a short rest, our last glorious night is waiting for us in the decorated "Naples of the East"!
Our last day in the magnificent Nafplio and we want nothing to lose!
After check-out, our breakfast includes a visit to the stunning Palamidi Fortress, which is maintained in excellent condition and is one of the great achievements of the fortification architecture. The construction of the fortress took place during the days of the Venetian General Envoy of the Fleet, Augustine Sadrod, from 1711 to 1714.
Above the fortress we will admire the imposing bastions, the historic chapel of St. Andrew and the impressive tanks that still collect the rain water of the hill today. Entry is 4 euros / person.
Our visit to the castle will be via the famous scale on its west side, east of Grimani bastion. Tradition wanted this ladder to have 999 steps, because the mill was dropped by Kolokotronis' horse. In fact, it has a few steps less and was constructed in the time of Otto by convicts who were imprisoned in Palamidi under the supervision of the Bavarian army.
Alternatively, for those who wish, we will reach the castle by bus via a highway leading to its eastern gate.
If one does not wish to visit the Palamidi fortress, they will be able to walk 3-4 km along the coast.
Having soaked up the dreamy Christmas breeze of Nafplio, we will be heading back to the North!
Our next stop in the beloved Metsovo! Built amphitheatrically in a wooded embrace beneath the neck of Qatar, Metsovo is an example of a mountainous settlement!
There in the taverns of his square, where the skewers are spun early with all kinds of meat, we'll have some free time to eat!
