One day excursion from Green Oliver's alternative tourism agency to Mount Paiko, which includes:
Group 1o: 11km hiking and exploring the lush forest overflowing!
Group 2o: 6.5km hiking by the river and yoga class in the heart of nature!
Mount Paiko is formed in the heart of Macedonia on the border of Pella and Kilkis counties. Its name comes from the Slavic "pajak" which means spider and suits him perfectly because it spreads over its low hills to a large extent and reminds of cobweb!
Its forest is full of beech trees and it is the largest chestnut forest in Greece! More than 250 families in the region, whose second profession is chestnut, produce up to 600 tons per year!
The highest peak of the mountain is Gola-Tsuka at an altitude of 1650m. and its name is derived from the Slavic "gola" which means naked, since there are no trees at the top.
Our hike will start shortly after the picturesque village of Kastaneri from a forest area at an altitude of about 1100 meters. At the beginning the route is downhill and crosses impressive slopes, where the power of nature really impresses! It reaches a ravine at an altitude of about 760 meters and passes over a wooden bridge.
This is where the real exploration and trekking begins! The route goes uphill and for the next 3km it moves through dense vegetation discovering Paiko's unknown beauties! It reaches up to 1280 meters, where it briefly enters a forest but still inaccessible road, which rewards with its beauty our climb.
Until we finally get back on a dense path that will take us to the heart of the stream! The trail again becomes spectacular and crosses the river repeatedly over picturesque wooden bridges until it reaches a beautiful forest area.
The route we take requires good physical fitness and is strictly for hikers - explorers!
• Total route length: 11 km (crossing)
• Total hiking time: 4 hours
• Degree of difficulty of ride: 2 (good physical condition)
• Suitable for children: 12+ (adult required)
The Yogis Group will start hiking again from around 1100 meters, but from an observatory overlooking the Stravopotamos Gorge!
The path we will follow at its start is downhill for about the first 20 minutes. Then it gets really magical and crosses the stream eight times over wooden bridges built by the Goumenissa Forest Service, and at some point we will have to cross it (we will need a small towel)!
It moves in a charming and lush nature with the greatness of the wet element flooding until it finally reaches a forest area!
There in the idyllic area a hatha yoga class will take place! There we will release our spirit into the embrace of nature, which will become one with the breath of the mountain!
Those who do not wish to do yoga, but would prefer to follow the shorter hiking of the 2nd Group, will have free time in the beautiful forest area with plenty of running water.
And having completed the yoga lesson, we will cool off for a while on the banks of the river, before starting our return from the same path to satiate every drop of nature's dew!
The hiking we do is walkable and is aimed at most of the moderately fit, while the hatha yoga course is tailored to suit beginners as well.
• Total route length: 6.5 mm (front / rear)
• Total hiking time: 2.30 hours
• Degree of difficulty of ride: 1+ (moderate fitness)
• Suitable for children: 7+ (adult required)
Then, after both groups have completed our hikes and activities, we will meet up to go to a picturesque village for food (optional).
