Description

Pelion

On the one hand the Pagasitic Gulf, on the other the Aegean. And in the middle the magic mountain!

Pelion is a mountain in the prefecture of Magnesia next to the city of Volos. With its highest peak, Stavros, rising to 1624 meters and a length of about 50 kilometers, Pelion is the natural border of Magnesia with the Aegean Sea.

The whole mountain is full of forests with tall beech, oak, plane trees, chestnut trees and pine forests. At lower altitudes there are apple trees on the eastern slopes and olives on the south.

The beaches of Pelion on both the Aegean Sea and the Pagasitic Sea are famous for their clear blue waters and many have been awarded the blue flag of the European Union.

According to mythology, in Pelion lived the Centaurs and the wise Chiron, near whom Achilles and Asclepius learned to teach medicine by establishing the snake as its symbol.

Detailed program

Day 1

Departure at 08.00 from the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki on Manolis Andronikos (extension of Basil Olga and Basil Georgiou to the center, shortly after the Town Hall). Stop will take place at 08.10 and at the traffic light at the height of One Salonica (diagonally across from Media Markt).

Our journey for a magical three days of action, exploration and history began! Our first destination and stop in the picturesque Portaria! The name of the village derives from the monastery of "Panagia Portarea", which was built around 1273, and its characteristic features are its large mansions, Thessaloniki-style with roofs of stone slabs!

Group 1o

The group of our hikers! We are awaiting a relatively slow hiking in the nature of the Northwest Pelion, which starts from Portaria, reaches the square of the village of Stagiates and from there ends to the cosmopolitan Makrinitsa!

The route we take is relatively easy and is aimed at people with moderate fitness. Specifically:

• Total route length: 5.5 mm (crossing)
• Total hiking time: 2 hours
• Degree of difficulty of ride: 1+ (moderate fitness)

Group 2o

Those who do not want to walk will have the opportunity to stay in Portaria for about 2 hours and explore its well-kept secret, enjoying local delicacies from the countless traditional shops!

They will then be taken by bus to neighboring Makrinitsa, where they will meet the group of hikers!

Makrinitsa, rightly described in 1934 by Eleftherios Venizelos as the "balcony of Pelion" is a unique preserved settlement, which undoubtedly stands out and steals the hearts of thousands of visitors every year! It has managed to preserve its traditional architectural elements intact and today is one of the most outstanding examples of Pelion architecture.

There we will walk on its traditional cobbled streets, reach the central cosmopolitan square with the centuries-old plane trees, where we will admire the marble fountain of the Immortal Water and the chapel of St. John the Baptist. We will also visit one of the most famous cafes, Theophilos, created in 1910 and hosts the large fresco painting of the homonymous folk painter.

And of course we will have plenty of time to enjoy delicious food in its traditional taverns!

After enjoying the magical atmosphere of Makrinitsa, we will board the bus to Chania, where we will check-in at our hotel.

There at an altitude of more than 1000 meters we will feel the magic of Pelion and will have free time in the mountainous settlement!

Day 2

After having our breakfast, we will board the bus to begin our exploration of incredible trails and picturesque traditional villages!

Group 1o

The group of fanatical Green Oliver hikers, who will enjoy a magical route that we brought out 1.5 years ago in Thessaloniki's natural society!

This is the beloved "Cascade Trail", which was cleaned and signaled by EOS Volos and starts near the ski resort of Pelion! An amazing walk through the beech and chestnut forest along the course of the Great Stream!

What makes the trail truly special is the many running rapids, which form impressive waterfalls and pedestals! Best for any genuine explorer and hiker who will have the opportunity to admire the most hidden beauties of the magic mountain!

Our final destination is Makrirachi Square, where we will have a short time to have a coffee in the village square before moving to Kissos!

The beautiful route we take requires moderate fitness. Specifically:

• Total length of route: 9 km (downhill from 1200m to 300m)
• Total hiking time: 4 hours
• Degree of difficulty in walking: 2 (moderate fitness)

Group 2o

We will go by coach to Mouresi! It is a beautiful traditional village of Eastern Pelion, which is one of its oldest villages! Its picturesque square, the centuries-old plane trees, the traditional church, and even more, the fantastic view of the Aegean Sea generously welcomes and impresses every traveler!

From there, a short and easy hike will take place, gently descending and ending in the famous Damouhari! Specifically:

• Total route length: 3 km (crossing)
• Total hiking time: 1 hour
• Degree of route difficulty: 1 (basic fitness)

What to say about Damouchari, the natural harbor on the south side of Pelion!

A small picturesque and quiet settlement consisting of two small bays, united by a peninsula, on which there are castle ruins!

There was even shooting for the first Mamma Mia in Damouchari! This is the place where Meryl Streep welcomes her two old and beloved girlfriends to her daughter's wedding! In addition, the beautiful village is the backdrop of the choreography of the song "Dancing Queen"!

After touring Damouchari, we will then take the bus to Kissos!

This lovely mountain village of Pelion, famous for its food! There we will all have some free time for a genuine Pelion meal that will be unforgettable for us, as well as for walks in the narrow streets of the picturesque village!

Then we will go back to Chania and our hotel, where for those who are still enduring there will be free time for evening walks!

Day 3

Our tour of the magic mountain is not over and day 3 will be just as exciting! After having our breakfast, we will depart by bus to our destination this time in the sunken green of Tsagarada!

Built amphitheatrically on a verdant slope, also known as the artists' village, it will welcome us to Agia Paraskevi Square, where the Tsagarada plane tree is one of the oldest trees in Greece and perhaps Europe. According to foresters, his age is 1000 years, and the circumference of his trunk reaches 15 meters!

There we will have free time for coffee and of course we will not miss the opportunity to taste the local pies and delicious Tsagarada sweets!

Then we will take the bus to Milies! The area that played an important role in the history of Magnesia and the Greek Nation, as the so-called "School of Milies" founded by Gazis, Constantas and Philippides, was an important spiritual center of the era and the center of the liberation struggle of 1821.

An excellent hiking and tour is waiting for us, passing through the most important sights of the area until you reach the picturesque Vizitsa!

We will initially have the opportunity to admire the De Quiricco Bridge, which is only 500 meters from Milies Station. Its construction is unique in the world, because the rails curve over the bridge carrier that is straight. The bridge was named after its designer Evaristo De Quirico (father of artist Giorgio De Quirico).

From there we will follow a short uphill path for about 30 minutes, which will lead us to the Holy Monastery of Agios Ioannis Prodromos and then to the square of the village of Vizitsa!

And of course we can't miss another visit to the impressive Kafidi waterfall!

The route we take as a whole requires a moderate fitness. Specifically:

• Total route length: 5.5 mm (crossing)
• Total hiking time: 2 hours
• Degree of difficulty of ride: 1+ (moderate fitness)

If some do not like to walk, they will have free time in Milies until they are transferred to Vizitsa by coach.

Then we have a delicious meal that will perfectly complement a unique October 28th weekend in the magnificent nature of Pelion!
