The kourtaliotiko Gorge can be found in the southern prefecture of Rethymno, in Crete, with its beginning located near the village of Koxare. The gorge is formed between the Kuroupa and Xiro mountains and its walls reach up to 600 meters in height. Many cave systems can be found inside the walls of the canyon. The gorge is crossed by the river Kourtaliotis, which flows into Preveli, where we can find the palm forest. The name of the gorge may be due to the fact that the wind when passing through the gorge sounds like rattles. Kourtaliotis is one of the few rivers in Crete with a permanent flow of water throughout the year.
