The total area of the mountain reaches 128,432 acres while Penteli as a mountain is famous for its unique marble, which has been used since antiquity for the construction of important monuments such as the Parthenon.
The original name of the mountain was Vrilissos, while in ancient times the Attic municipality of Penteli was inhabited by the Antiochidio tribe. We owe the renaming of Vrilissos to Penteli to the historian Pausanias during the 3rd century BC.
